A PLACE TO START

Looking beyond a checklist

ADHD can involve ongoing difficulties with attention, impulsivity or restlessness. In adults, these may affect daily routines, work, study or relationships. Similar difficulties can have other causes, which is why a thorough assessment matters.

There is no single test that confirms ADHD. Assessment considers your experiences now, evidence of symptoms in childhood and how difficulties affect different parts of your life. It also considers other conditions that may explain or occur alongside them.

WHAT IS INCLUDED

Understanding the whole picture

A careful assessment that considers your experiences, history and what support may be helpful next.

Your experiences, a detailed assessment and a conversation with our team all contribute to a clearer understanding of your individual needs.

ASSESSMENT, EXPLAINED

Your experiences and history

Share what you notice day to day and how this has changed over time.

Discuss current challenges, childhood experiences, strengths and strategies you already use. Information from others can help build a fuller picture.

Clinical interview and assessment tools

A conversation that looks beyond individual symptoms.

A clinical interview, validated assessment tools and a detailed personal history help build a clearer picture of your experiences. The assessment also considers other conditions that may explain or occur alongside your difficulties.

Feedback and further support

Understand the findings and explore your next steps.

The service includes diagnostic feedback and a detailed assessment report. Following your assessment, you will be offered an optional follow-up appointment with a psychiatrist for diagnostic clarification and treatment planning. This appointment incurs an additional fee.

GETTING STARTED

02

Confirm the arrangements

Before booking, ask the team about availability, fees, what is included and any forms or records you should provide.

03

BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

A little preparation can help

You do not need to have every detail ready. These suggestions can help you organise what you would like to discuss.

If records are unavailable or involving another person is difficult, let the team know and ask how to proceed.

  • Write down everyday examples

Note situations at home, work or study that you find difficult, and what helps.

  • Gather available records

Previous assessments, school reports or relevant health records can help provide background information. It is okay if some of these records are unavailable.

  • Bring your health information

Prepare a list of medications and relevant physical and mental health history.

  • Consider another perspective

With your agreement, information from someone who knows you well may help. Ask the team what they need and how it should be provided.

  • List your questions

Include questions about the process, report, costs and any recommended follow-up.

FEES AND FUNDING

Know the arrangements before booking

The Adult ADHD Assessment Service is an outpatient service for self-funded patients only. Medicare rebates and private health insurance rebates are not available for this service. The service is also not part of an acute inpatient admission.

Ask the team to clarify

  • Current assessment fees and payment arrangements.
  • What the quoted fee includes.
  • Fees for the optional psychiatrist follow-up appointment.
  • Any additional costs associated with further support.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Before you take
the next step

Clear information can help you decide what to ask and how to prepare.

Does an online questionnaire diagnose ADHD?

No. Questionnaires can support assessment, but they do not replace a clinical evaluation or establish a diagnosis on their own.

Why discuss childhood experiences?

ADHD begins in childhood, even when it is recognised later. Understanding your earlier experiences helps the clinician consider whether the diagnostic criteria are met.

What if I do not have school reports?

Not having access to your school reports does not prevent you from participating in the assessment process. While school reports can provide useful information about your childhood experiences, they are not a requirement to begin an assessment. If they are unavailable, the team can discuss other ways to explore your history.

How long does assessment take?

Contact the team for the current appointment structure, availability and expected reporting timeframe. The team can explain the arrangements before you book.

Does assessment automatically lead to medication?

No. Assessment does not guarantee a diagnosis or a prescription. Any treatment discussion depends on the findings, your health and your preferences.

Is a hospital admission required?

No. This service is provided on an outpatient basis.
