Introducing Dr Kartikey Agarwal – Medical Director of Perth Clinic’s Acute Admission Program
Dr Kartikey Agarwal is Medical Director of Perth Clinic’s Acute Admission Program and is a private Consultant Psychiatrist at the Clinic. He has practiced psychiatry in Western Australia for over a decade, initially as a Registrar at the Alma Street Centre, Fremantle and as Senior Registrar at Royal Perth Hospital, completing the RANZCP clinical exam and gaining admission to Fellowship in 2011. Since that time, Dr Agarwal has served as Consultant Psychiatrist at both the Alma Street Centre and Graylands Hospital, working across the acute inpatient and early psychosis intervention teams as well as the Stirling region Hospital in the Home (HITH) team. Dr Agarwal is extensively published in the psychiatry and behavioural sciences literature and has attended and contributed to numerous international conferences. His research interests include pharmacotherapies for schizophrenia and psychological treatments.
The Acute Admission Program at Perth Clinic aims to provide for private patients a gateway to unplanned psychiatric admission in a private hospital setting, responding to patients in acute crisis and often with complex needs who are able to be managed in our 100-bed open facility. In many cases, the Program enables patients to avoid unnecessary public emergency department attendance and management, thus representing a considerable support to demands placed on the wider health system. It has operated very successfully since the 1990s, supporting the acute needs of thousands of private mental health patients over that time.
Clinical governance of the Acute Admission Program at Perth Clinic is provided by over a dozen of our Consultant Psychiatrists who participate in the on-call roster, receiving referrals from GPs, public hospitals and community teams as well as directly from the Clinic’s 42 accredited consultant psychiatrists and other referrers. Patients may be admitted as inpatients or referred on to Perth Clinic’s day hospital (offering a wide range of psychotherapy programs that aim to manage acute crises) or to the Clinic’s domiciliary outreach services.
