steps for immigrating to Australia
When applying for a job in a different country there are many processes and procedures to follow, some of which can be quite complex. Australia is no different. We have compiled this information sheet, which although not definitive, should provide enough information to start you on your way.
- Decide if Australia is for you
- Nurse Registration
- Visa Application
- Perth Clinic Sponsorship
- Migration Agents
- What new arrivals to Perth Clinic have to say
1. DECIDE IF AUSTRALIA IS FOR You!
1. Find out if you would like to work in Australia first. We believe Western Australia is a great place to live and Perth Clinic is the leading provider of psychiatric care within the state.

2. NURSE Registration
Each Australian State and Territory has separate legislation covering the recognition of nursing qualifications.
To practice nursing you have to be registered with the local State or Territory nursing Board.
Before you can start working as a nurse, you need to complete two separate processes.
The first step is Recognition of your Overseas nursing Qualification by the Australian Nursing Council. The second step is Registration with the State Nursing Board.
Recognition is the first step and common to all Overseas Trained Nurse. Registration is applicable only to the Overseas Trained Nurse whose qualification has already been recognized by Australian Nursing Council and who is going to work in a place that is within the jurisdiction of the Nursing Board.
Generally if you are registered with one State Nursing Board, you can practice freely in the other states. But, rules and regulations always change. So, you must always contact the respective State Nursing Board for current procedures.
- Contact the Australian Nursing Council at www.anmc.org.au as they need to assess the suitability of your qualifications for immigration purposes before you can be registered or enrolled. This process is the part that is taking the longest to complete and the sooner you commence it the better. It is not possible to proceed until this is completed.
- Each State in Australia operates there own Nurses Registration Board or Council. Each of which are charged under an Australia Act of Parliament to register nurses, monitor breaches of conduct and review educational standards. The Western Australian board can be found at www.nbwa.org.au Also if English is not your first language, then you will need to undergo a professional English language competency test.
3. VISA Application
Contact the Australian High Commission or Embassy in your country for visa information and information concerning temporary working visas and/or permanent emigration requirements
www.immi.gov.au is the place to start for general information concerning immigration requirements to Australia. You will find the forms that you need on this site.
More on Visas
There are 3 types of visa appropriate for overseas visitors wishing to work full time in Australia:
Working Holiday Visa
Entitles the bearer to stay and work in Australia for 12 months, with no more than 3 months with any one employer. Perth Clinic is able to offer casual employment to travelling nurses on this type of visa for a three month period. We can also introduce employees to similar facilities in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart. This is an ideal visa for someone just qualified who wants to travel and see Australia.
Permanent Resident Visa
This visa entitles the holder to reside permanently in Australia with no work restrictions. Nurses are currently recognised in the skilled entry category which makes the process for applying for permanent visa much easier.
Sponsored Business Visa
Enables the bearer to live and work in Australia for up to 4 years with certain employment restrictions (must remain employed by the business holding the sponsorship). The application process is relatively inexpensive and can be speedy (less than 3 months if lucky).
4. PERTH CLINIC Sponsorship
Perth Clinic can use the Employer Nomination Scheme which should make the process easier. Perth Clinic applies to the Department of Immigration to sponsor you under this Scheme.
Once you have been accepted for a position at Perth Clinic the process is as follows
- Qualifications approved by ANMC.
- Register with the Nurses Board of Western Australia.
- Forward the registration to Perth Clinic.
- Perth Clinic will then apply for the employer nominated scheme (785).
- Perth Clinic will advise you of the application.
- You will need to complete forms 26 and 160 for health checks, and police clearance forms 47p before you lodge your application.
- You will then lodge your application at the same business centre that Perth Clinic has used to lodge the employment nominated scheme (47ES).
5. MIGRATION Agents
Some people decide to use Migration Agents to help them through the process; this can be expensive but can also be very useful. It is important to note that you don’t have to use a migration agent and that most of the hard work you will need to do yourself anyway. In addition the benefit of an offer of employment by Perth Clinic is that we will help guide you through the process and will have contact by email with you as to reassure and offer advice.

6. WHAT NEW ARRIVALS TO PERTH CLINIC HAVE TO Say….
- Fight the urge to rush into decisions, about houses, transport and schools. Better to look at as many options as possible before committing. The urge to get things settled can be great, but having an insider’s opinion may help avoid making ‘duff’ choices.
- Be prepared for the ‘culture shock’ of things being different, unless you have been in a busy environment it may take some getting up to speed. Things ain’t what they seem, medications and prescribing is different from the UK.
- Embrace the lifestyle, adjust to the different life, you may need to make an effort to develop social links, but once you do, it can be a busy social life.
And….
- Coming to Perth was one of the best things our family has ever done. It wasn't easy there were times when we could have ditched the whole thing, the endless forms, the waiting not to mention the disruption of selling up and saying farewells to family and friends.
- For us it has been a real adventure and one that we are all really enjoying. Perth is great, our house is lovely, summer has been a delight and our children are very happy with their new friends and schools.
- We did feel a bit lost at first but everyone has been so helpful. For me working at Perth Clinic has given me back some of the pleasure that I used to get at work. There seem much fewer hassles and you get the sense that everyone really does want to make a difference to patients.
- It is different working in another country and I have had to catch myself not always sounding like the UK way is the best, now I have a better understanding of how things work I don't believe that at all.
