Perth Clinic’s graduate program provides each graduate with complex practice skills to meet the multifaceted needs of patients with mental health problems. Throughout the 12 month program you will acquire the ability to screen and make safe decisions regarding issues that intrude or complicate psychiatric care. You will expand your role as a nurse and a new dynamic scope of practice will be achieved that is meaningful to all aspects of nursing care.
A 12 month supported program, with a preceptor and education learning provided by staff development is provided. Clinical supervision will be offered to graduate nurse and continuing performance reviews will assist you to process and identify learning goals and work your way through the competency based standards. You will learn how biological as well as psychosocial theories merge to provide holistic mental health care. You will gain knowledge in how to share, network and collaborate with colleagues within the psychiatric setting, to plan and implement effective changes in patient care. The emphasis during your graduate year will be on competency and your ability to deliver accountable high quality care across a range of psychiatric disorders. Perth Clinic has its own Professional Development portfolio which will allow you to record your professional experience and evaluate the development of your skills.
You will become skilled at how to evaluate and formulate treatment of individuals with depression, anxiety, severe and persistent mental health disorders, substance abuse, adolescent emotional disorders and eating disorders. Knowledge of psychopharmacology and the biological basis of its use in mental illness will form an important component of your learning. Support will be given to nurses who desire to do research that changes the approach to health care and knowledge about psychiatric disorders and their treatment.
Graduate placements at Perth Clinic encourage nurses to take the lead in implementing nursing knowledge and skills, and at the same time add an extra dimension to the nurse’s development of his/her career and professional practice.

Graduate Perspective
Intake: Perth Clinic offers two graduate intakes per year, January and July.
